The cuisine is the dishes, snacks etc of a country or region. The cuisine of a place is influenced by culture, environment and religion. When people from different cultures settle down in a foreign country they take along with them their own special cuisine i.e., the culinary practices and traditions followed in their native land.

Here we will be exploring some of the most popular cuisines in the world:

British Cuisine:

British cuisine consists of cooking and baking methods and ingredients that are associated with Britain and its Overseas Territories. The cuisine is heavily influenced by its history, it has been home to many invaders who have brought along their own recipes and thus this country’s cuisine has evolved over hundreds of years through multiple ethnic groups’ assimilation into British culture. British cuisine is one of the most popular cuisines in the world, due to its widespread and easy preparation.

American Cuisine:

American cuisine consists of a rich history involving influences from Europe, Africa, the Americas and the Middle East . This country’s traditional food items include a strong emphasis on meats such as beef, chicken, pork and lamb. The types of pieces of bread served with meals also vary from region to region with crusty white being common in many areas while cornbread or wheaten bread is more popular in some others. In different regions, meats can be prepared according to various methods including grilling, baking, smoking and frying.

Indian Cuisine:

Indian cuisine has evolved over thousands of years and its rich history is evident in the variety of cuisines and cooking styles. With regional cuisines from all parts of India, Indian food is very diverse. Most Indians cook their staple food which is generally a “thali” (a plate with different small servings of steamed rice, lentil curry, a cooked vegetable dish such as spinach or potato curry, chapati, some pickles and papadum). It’s common for an average middle-class family to eat 3 meals a day.

Chinese Cuisine:

Chinese cuisine varies greatly among regions and cultures in China because of natural climate and terrain differences and the traditional practices of rinsing off, boiling and discarding ingredients. One can find northern Chinese cuisine consisting of wheat noodles, roasted meats and vegetables. In contrast, southern Chinese cuisine usually uses fermented goodies such as soy sauce and rice. These geographical contrasts have led to a wide diversity of ingredients that can be used ranging from beef to chicken or tofu.

Japanese Cuisine:

The traditional Japanese diet includes a lot of fresh fish which is low in saturated fat and a vast range of different types of seaweed that contain large amounts of calcium, iron, iodine, magnesium, vitamin A (from beta carotene ), thiamine (Vitamin B1) and niacin. The Japanese diet also consists of green tea which contains small quantities of caffeine. This has helped the people who consume this food remain healthy throughout the centuries.

African Cuisine:

With the variety of ethnic groups in Africa, African cuisine has developed over thousands of years. The cuisine varies greatly between different parts of the continent; it differs by country, region and culture. African cooking techniques are diverse which include roasting, baking, boiling, frying and steaming. Some ingredients found in African cuisines are peanuts (native to South America ), cashew (native to Brazil ) and vanilla (originating from Madagascar).

South Korean Cuisine:

Korean cuisine is spicy with salted vegetables being used as one seasoning. Traditional Korean foods have influenced Japanese cuisine so much so that it is difficult for an untrained palate to tell them apart. One food common to both is kimchi which consists of vegetables that are fermented with spices.

Thai Cuisine:

Thai cuisine is one of the most well-known in Asia, with its unique balance of five fundamental flavors being used in all Thai dishes. With strong regional variations within Thailand, fish sauce, garlic ginger and chili pastes are commonly added to the dish for an extra flavor. Some popular ingredients include rice flour, coconut milk, lemongrass, galangal (a type of ginger), shrimp paste and holy basil . Chicken tikka masala is a very famous dish from Britain which was invented by Bangladeshi chefs living there during the curry boom.

Italian Cuisine:

Italian cuisine varies greatly from north to south, especially with their respective border locations. The Italian food that is most popular worldwide is pasta. It ranges from pasta in various shapes with meat, vegetables or cheese being added to sauces that are made using tomatoes, garlic and onion.

Greek Cuisine:

People are often familiar with the food of the Mediterranean countries including Greece which has a wide variety of dishes. Greek cuisine consists of fresh fish, seafood, olives, olive oil, grains, wine, herbs and spices. Their cuisines have been influenced by Ottoman and Italian cultures as well as other surrounding countries such as Spain and Turkey.
